What the May 2024 Gannon Storm Taught Us About Grid Vulnerability

On the weekend of May 10, 2024, the Sun handed us the strongest geomagnetic storm in twenty years. NOAA rated it G5, the very top of the scale, and people were posting aurora photos from as far south as Mexico. For most of us it was a gorgeous, once-in-a-decade light show. If you pay attention to infrastructure, though, it read more like a warning shot.

What actually happened

The storm, later named the Gannon Storm, didn't take down the power grid. Most G5 storms don't, so that part wasn't the story. What it did was quieter and, honestly, more instructive: it knocked out precision GPS across huge stretches of the country at the worst possible moment. It was peak planting season in the Midwest, and modern farming runs on GPS-guided tractors. When the navigation signals degraded, that equipment couldn't place itself accurately in the field, and the work simply stopped.

An agricultural economist at Kansas State later put the losses to Midwestern crop producers at somewhere around $565 million. Sit with that for a second. It came from a storm well short of the historic benchmark, the 1859 Carrington Event.

The real lesson isn't "the grid held"

It's tempting to read "the grid didn't fail" and exhale. I'd read it the other way. A mid-tier extreme storm did half a billion dollars of damage through a second-order effect almost nobody outside the industry was watching. Not blackouts. GPS.

That's the pattern worth remembering. The real danger from space weather usually isn't the disaster-movie headline. It's the chain of dependencies most of us never see. GPS timing keeps cell networks and card transactions in sync. Satellite internet degrades. High-frequency radio drops out. Each of those carries its own downstream ripple.

What it means for your house

You don't run a GPS combine, I know. But every takeaway scales right down to a normal household:

  • Assume GPS can fail. Keep paper maps of your area, and actually know your routes without a screen in your hand.

  • Assume comms can degrade. A hand-crank NOAA radio is how official instructions reach you when the networks are straining.

  • Assume timing-dependent systems get flaky. Card readers, ATMs, and some payment systems all lean on synchronized networks. Keep some cash in small bills.

  • Treat the watch window as the event. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (spaceweather.gov) flagged this one before it arrived. That lead time is exactly when you top off fuel, water, and batteries.

Why this keeps mattering

Solar Cycle 25 peaked around late 2024 into 2025, and elevated activity tends to linger for years on the downslope. So Gannon almost certainly wasn't a one-off. It was more of a preview, and a cheap one, assuming we bother to take the lesson from it: a storm doesn't have to knock out the grid to cost you a genuinely bad week.
