Backup Power for a Grid-Down Event: Solar Generators Explained
Updated: Sep 11
A portable power station stores electrical energy in a battery and provides outputs through its power electronics. A compatible panel converts sunlight to electricity to recharge it; “solar generator” is a common sales term for this combination, not a fuel-burning generator. Normal operation produces no combustion exhaust, but the unit still requires the ventilation, temperature limits and clearances in its manual.
Start with energy, output and startup demand
Watt-hours (Wh) measure energy; watts (W) measure power, the rate at which energy is used or supplied. Battery energy helps estimate runtime. Continuous and surge output ratings determine whether a power station can run and start the intended loads.
For example, a nominal 1,000Wh battery with an assumed 85% usable-energy factor provides about 850Wh at the load. At a steady 150W, estimated runtime is 850 / 150 = 5.7 hours. The 85% factor is an example, not a measured specification: inverter overhead, temperature, battery age and discharge limits change the result.
Sizing it to your actual life
Add up what you'd genuinely want to keep alive during an outage:
Phone, radio, LED lights: measure their combined average demand and the hours you need them. Small loads still consume a finite reserve.
CPAP machine: use the manufacturer's specification and test your actual settings. Humidifiers and heaters can change demand substantially. Confirm backup compatibility and an alternative care plan with your equipment provider.
Refrigerator: measure energy over a complete day because the compressor cycles. Daily watt-hours determine energy needs; startup demand determines whether the inverter can start it. Temperature, door openings and appliance condition change consumption.
There is no universal battery size. List essential devices, average watts, hours per day and startup requirements. Add daily watt-hours, allow a reserve, and compare with usable battery energy. Prioritize medical needs separately from convenience loads.
The part people leave off
Solar panels add a charging option, not a guarantee. Output depends on sunlight, shading, season, temperature, orientation and input limits. Check connector, voltage and current compatibility. Plan for poor-weather days: ongoing operation requires enough usable daily charging energy to replace daily consumption.
Build it in layers
Power banks for short-term phone or radio charging, sized to actual energy needs.
A portable power station with compatible solar panels for larger essential loads, sized from measured demand and a realistic recharge plan.
If you use a fuel-burning generator, follow its fuel type, storage and maintenance instructions and local fire rules. Let it cool before refueling. For household wiring, use properly installed transfer equipment; never backfeed a wall outlet.
Specifications you should verify
Check continuous output, surge output and permitted surge duration. A refrigerator, pump or other motor may fail to start even when its running watts fit the inverter. Also check usable capacity, idle draw, temperature limits, certification information, warranty and manufacturer instructions. Test intended loads together before relying on the system.
Match watt-hours to required runtime and watts to simultaneous loads, then verify startup and charging compatibility. For medical devices, follow manufacturer requirements and a tested care contingency plan. Portable fuel-burning generators must operate outside, more than 20 feet from doors, windows and vents, with exhaust away from buildings. Never use them in a garage; keep working carbon-monoxide alarms.
Compare potential equipment against your measured requirements. The gear page is a starting point for further research, not evidence that a product has been tested for your household.
