Can a solar storm really take down the power grid?

Is a solar storm the same as an EMP?

Not quite. An EMP from a high-altitude nuclear detonation produces three pulses (E1, E2, E3). That's why a solar storm won't fry your car or phone the way movies suggest - but the grid damage can still disrupt daily life.

Will my car still run during a solar storm?

Almost certainly, yes. A solar storm is not the movie version of an EMP. Keep your tank above half anyway, because fuel pumps need grid power to work.
